Two very different deserts. Honest tradeoffs on dunes, drive time, crowd levels, and where to camp under the best stars.
Every week we get the same question: Merzouga or Zagora? The honest answer is they're not the same trip, and the right one for you depends on how much drive time you'll accept and what kind of desert you want.
Merzouga β the postcard Sahara
Erg Chebbi's dunes are the tallest in Morocco β some topping 150 meters. This is the Sahara from the photos: curved ridges, red at sunset, unbroken silence after dark. From Marrakech it's a full two-day drive each way via Ouarzazate and Todra Gorge β which is why most travelers loop it with a 3-day tour.
Zagora β the closer, quieter alternative
Zagora's dunes (Erg Chigaga and the smaller Tinfou) are 5β8 hours from Marrakech. Reachable in a long day. The scale is smaller, but so are the crowds, and the stars are every bit as bright.
Quick comparison
- Dune scale: Merzouga wins (big).
- Drive time from Marrakech: Zagora is half.
- Camp variety: Merzouga has more luxury options.
- Crowds: Zagora is quieter, especially in shoulder season.
- Star quality: equal β both are true dark-sky sites.
Which camp to pick
In Merzouga, our favorite is a small 8-tent luxury camp set behind a dune ridge β private washrooms, full dinner service, berber musicians after sunset. In Zagora, we keep things simple: a boutique bivouac with hot showers and a single long table where travelers eat together.
βIf it's your only Sahara trip, do Merzouga. If it's not your only one, Zagora will surprise you.β
What to pack
- Layers β desert nights drop to 8Β°C even in April
- A scarf long enough to wrap as a cheche
- A head torch, not a phone flashlight
- Contact lenses? Bring glasses for the camel ride too
